Bristol & Bath · Choosing a school
Bristol and Bath private schools: which week fits your child?
Bristol and Bath schools ask very different things of a child and family. Some are day-only; others build the week around boarding. Some begin Senior School in Year 7; Clifton and Monkton do not. Some timetable Saturday lessons; others keep Saturday free of formal lessons while retaining fixtures. Those differences should shape the shortlist before reputation or test preparation does.

Five Bristol schools—and five different propositions
| School and model | What changes the decision |
|---|---|
| Bristol Grammar School Coed · day · Reception–Sixth | City school with several younger entries; Year 7 uses four written components in the currently described cycle. |
| Clifton College Coed · day and boarding | Year 7 remains in Prep; Year 9 begins Upper School, where the week includes Saturday teaching and sport. |
| Redmaids’ High Girls · day · Junior–Sixth | Detailed 2027 Year 7 papers and an interview for every candidate; conditional Junior progression and a long supervised day. |
| Badminton School Girls · day and boarding | Year 7, Year 9 and Lower Sixth use different routes; weekly, full and occasional boarding shape the choice. |
| QEH Bristol Boys through Year 11 · coed Sixth · day | Online adaptive and non-adaptive work, taster and interview; city teaching with sport at Failand. |
Do not let the word “Grammar” turn Bristol Grammar into a state grammar-school application. It is an independent fee-paying school with its own process. QEH is not fully coeducational: boys attend through Year 11, then the Sixth Form is mixed.
Redmaids and Badminton both educate girls, but only Badminton offers boarding. Clifton is mixed and can work for a day family, yet its Upper School week remains boarding-shaped. Those are family-life distinctions before they are academic comparisons.
Five Bath schools ask five different things of the week
| School and model | What changes the decision |
|---|---|
| Royal High School Bath Girls · day and boarding · ages 9–18 | One Lansdown-site school since September 2026; Year 7 talk and object task, with boarding and IB questions to confirm. |
| King Edward’s School Bath Coed · day · Nursery–Sixth | Several younger entries, clear 2027 Senior dates and a planned campus consolidation with conflicting timing. |
| Kingswood School Coed · day, flexi, weekly and full boarding | Large published Year 7 intake, group activity and a long activity day without formal Saturday lessons. |
| Prior Park College Coed · day, flexi, weekly and full boarding | Screen maths/NVR, 50-minute writing, interview and teamwork; Saturday Active is optional for day pupils. |
| Monkton Combe School Coed · day and boarding | Years 7–8 remain in Prep; Senior begins in Year 9 and follows a substantive Saturday programme. |
Royal High is the girls’ option in this Bath set. Since September 2026 it begins at age nine on one Lansdown site; descriptions of a 3–18 school with a separate Prep are out of date. KES is the day-only, all-through coeducational choice.
Kingswood, Prior Park and Monkton offer several boarding intensities, but the labels do not describe the same week. A family needing one occasional night should not assume a school’s “flexi” or “three-night” offer is permanently available.
Year 7 assessment in Bristol and Bath, side by side
Ten schools, ten different Year 7 processes. Our school guides set out each one in full; this table puts the published ingredients next to each other.
| School | Main entry points | What Year 7 applicants do | Day or boarding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Badminton | 11+, 13+ and 16+ | English, online maths, cognitive reasoning, interview and reference | Girls; day, weekly and full boarding |
| Bristol Grammar School | Reception, Years 3 and 5, Year 7, sixth form | In the currently described cycle: 45-minute creative writing, 20-minute comprehension, 30-minute problem solving and 20-minute arithmetic | Coeducational day |
| Redmaids’ High | 7+, 11+ and 16+ | Four timed assessment components and an interview for every candidate | Girls’ day |
| QEH | Years 3 and 5, Year 7, sixth form | Online assessment; every Senior applicant is interviewed | Day; boys to Year 11, co-ed sixth form |
| Clifton College | 11+ (in Prep), 13+ and 16+ | Online CAT4 for Year 7 and Year 9 | Coeducational day and boarding |
| King Edward’s Bath | Nursery/Reception, Years 3 and 5, Year 7, sixth form | Maths, English, verbal reasoning and an informal Senior interview | Coeducational day |
| Kingswood | 11+, 13+ and 16+ | English, maths, non-verbal reasoning, interview and a group activity for external candidates | Day, flexi, weekly and full boarding |
| Monkton Combe | 11+ (in Prep), 13+ and 16+ | Years 7–8: usually remote CAT4, references and two taster days | Coeducational day and boarding |
| Prior Park | 11+, 13+ and 16+ | About 45 minutes on screen, 50 minutes of creative writing, interview and teamwork | Day, plus full, weekly and occasional boarding |
| Royal High School Bath | 9+, 11+, 13+ and 16+ | An entrance assessment and an interview that includes a prepared talk | Girls’ day and boarding, ages 9–18 |
Creative or extended writing is a timed part of the process at Bristol Grammar and Prior Park, while Clifton and Monkton use CAT4 at this stage. Redmaids and QEH interview every candidate, and most of the others include an interview somewhere in the process.
At Clifton and Monkton, Year 7 is still in the Prep School, so the Senior School and its week begin at Year 9.
All ten descriptions come from the linked guides and the school pages they cite. Where a guide notes a contradiction or a 2026 cycle still online, the school’s confirmation should decide.
Treat Bristol and Bath as two travel problems
Draw the morning route and the return after the activity your child would actually choose. Do it for a wet weekday, not a quiet open morning. “Twenty minutes away” can become a different journey at school traffic time.
Bristol’s map has its own complications. Bristol Grammar is central but uses Failand for sport. QEH also teaches at Berkeley Place and uses Failand. Redmaids and Badminton are both in Westbury-on-Trym, yet their transport, late-day and boarding models differ.
Bath schools spread across Lansdown, North Road, Ralph Allen Drive, Combe Down and Monkton Combe. A station shuttle that leaves near 4pm does not solve a 5.30pm activity. A late bus is still only one part of the home journey.
Test Saturday separately. Clifton Upper and Monkton publish substantive six-day patterns. Kingswood has no formal Saturday lessons but keeps fixtures. Prior Park makes Saturday Active optional for day pupils, while fixtures can still matter.
Supervision, activities and late transport are three answers
BGS publishes a 3.50pm Senior finish and library access to 6pm, but no current late-school-bus promise. Redmaids describes supervised homework and care into the evening, while its three bus routes carried waiting lists for September 2026.
Badminton publishes Senior wraparound from 7.45am to 6.30pm and limited bus seats, with route-dependent return arrivals around 5.10–6.15pm. QEH’s complete Senior finish, late-activity and routine Failand-transfer pattern is not public.
At KES, teaching ends around 4pm and activities can run to 5.30pm, but the Bath Spa shuttle leaves at 4.10pm. Kingswood’s standard pattern reaches activities until 5.20pm and lists a 5.55pm Bath Spa return. Monkton’s coaches generally leave at 5.45pm after Senior clubs.
Royal High publishes 4.30pm weekday bus departures but not a complete lesson-day or later activity return. Prior Park publishes activities and prep to 5.45pm but no matching late return. Clifton lets day pupils stay through supper, yet its current transport page does not identify a late bus.
Activity rules also differ. BGS expects Years 7–8 to join clubs; Kingswood expects at least three weekly activities in Years 7–9 and two in Year 10. Monkton offers ensemble placement at any musical level, while reserving some groups by invitation. A school that does not publish a participation rule may still offer plenty to join.
Boarding labels conceal six different weeks
| School | Published pattern | Boarding arrangements to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Clifton | Prep flexi/full; Upper flexi/full/occasional | Upper is six-day; Prep flexi night wording conflicts |
| Royal High | Weekly, flexible and full | Weekly described Sunday–Friday; Saturday wording needs confirmation |
| Badminton | Weekly, full and occasional | Weekly nights, exeats and ordinary weekend numbers unpublished |
| Kingswood | Flexi, weekly and full | No formal Saturday lessons; weekly return timing unpublished |
| Prior Park | Flexi, weekly and full | Weekly nights unpublished; two quiet weekends placed differently |
| Monkton | Three-night, weekly and full | Senior three-night is a one-term taster; weekly includes Friday night |
Weekly can mean Sunday night to Friday at Royal High, Monday through Friday nights at Monkton, or a pattern that another school does not publish clearly. Senior three-night boarding at Monkton is currently a one-term taster, not permanent flexi.
A day pupil can still live a boarding-shaped week. Clifton Upper day pupils may remain for supper; Monkton day pupils can join house evenings; Kingswood pupils can stay for supper and prep. Decide whether your child would use that life before paying for access to it.
Compare one Year 7 day-cost baseline
These figures use 2026–27 Year 7 day tuition, with VAT and compulsory lunch added where separately charged. Three-term arithmetic is shown as an annual baseline. KES lunch is optional, so both figures appear. None is a September 2027 quotation or a complete first-year bill.
| School | Annual baseline | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Bristol Grammar | £22,266 | Compulsory lunch included |
| Clifton | £28,050 | Meals included; Year 7 is Prep |
| Royal High | £21,657 | Tuition and compulsory lunch |
| Redmaids | £23,310 | Tuition and compulsory lunch |
| Badminton | £25,506 | Tuition and compulsory lunch |
| QEH | £23,265 | Tuition and compulsory lunch |
| KES Bath | £22,590 / £23,565 | Lunch is optional; second figure includes it |
| Kingswood | £25,269 | Tuition, compulsory lunch and tea |
| Prior Park | £23,450 | Tuition and lunch; required device extra |
| Monkton | £25,005 | Calculated tuition and compulsory lunch |
Each school name links to its official fee page. Recheck the figures when 2027–28 schedules appear.
Add registration, deposits, transport, uniform, devices, examinations, trips, music and likely support. Clifton’s Year 7 day cost rises sharply at Year 9. Prior Park requires a school device, although the charging start needs confirmation. A lower baseline is not automatically lower total cost or better value.
Start the shortlist again for sixth form
Do not treat an existing pupil’s continuation as the same route as external 16+. Schools use different GCSE floors, subject prerequisites, papers, interviews and option blocks. The detailed profiles identify what is public and what must come from Admissions.
QEH becomes coeducational in Sixth Form. Royal High remains a girls’ school. Prior Park currently describes automatic Sixth Form progression for its Year 11 pupils, but subject conditions still matter. Other schools retain conditional or less explicit internal routes.
Compare the programme your teenager can actually build. Ask for the 2027 blocks, minimum grades, class-size cancellation rule, alternatives to A levels, extension courses and current outcomes with cohort sizes. Use our 16+ admissions guide to organise the questions.
Build ten application lines, not one regional calendar
The table gives the state of public Year 7 evidence on 4 September 2026. It is a planning prompt, not a substitute for the school’s confirmation. A dated scholarship event is not an ordinary admissions deadline.
| School | Published status | Confirm next |
|---|---|---|
| Bristol Grammar | 2027 ordinary cycle not published | Confirm every date and whether the 2026 paper format continues |
| Clifton | 2027 ordinary cycle incomplete | Do not use its dated scholarship calendar as ordinary entry |
| Royal High | Apply 9 Nov 2026; assess 3 Dec; interviews 11–15 Jan 2027; accept 8 Mar | Confirm the exact task format and offer date |
| Redmaids | Assessment 9 Jan 2027 | Ask whether the weekday or date number controls later deadlines |
| Badminton | Apply 9 Dec 2026; interviews w/c 11 Jan 2027; assess 16 Jan | Ask for the outcome and acceptance dates |
| QEH | Published 2027 dates conflict | Ask how a test can precede the stated application deadline |
| KES Bath | Apply 16 Nov 2026; test 16 Jan 2027; accept 1 Mar | Ask for the offer date |
| Kingswood | Registration, bursary and awards 23 Oct 2026; assess 8–9 Jan 2027; offers 1 Feb | Ask for the acceptance deadline |
| Prior Park | Apply 23 Nov 2026; Head interviews 12–13 Jan 2027; assess 15 Jan | Ask for offer and acceptance dates |
| Monkton | 2027 ordinary cycle not published | Separate ordinary entry from 11+ scholarship dates |
Redmaids’ published timetable gives offer and acceptance weekdays that do not match their date numbers. QEH lists a test before its stated application deadline and gives two offer descriptions. Do not silently “correct” either school. Ask which date controls in writing.
For a family applying to several schools, keep one line per route: registration, bursary, report/reference, interview, assessment, offer, acceptance and deposit. Blank cells are questions in your own calendar, not permission to copy a neighbour’s deadline.
