Chigwell School: a coeducational day school with sixth-form boarding
Chigwell combines a coeducational day school with a small sixth-form boarding community. Boarding is therefore a later option, not the setting in which younger pupils spend their week. The distinction matters when comparing it with schools whose day pupils share a full boarding routine.

Broad early choices, then a more focused sixth form
In Years 7–9, the published curriculum keeps arts, humanities, Latin and the separate sciences alongside English and maths. Pupils encounter French, German and Spanish on rotation before choosing one to continue. That gives an undecided child a chance to discover interests rather than arrive with every preference settled. Senior curriculum
At GCSE, at least one language remains in the core. Most pupils take separate sciences; some take a double award. Option blocks are built around pupils’ choices, but not every combination is possible.
The sixth form centres on A levels, usually three, with some pupils taking four and an optional Extended Project Qualification. This may appeal to a pupil who wants to concentrate on a few subjects. A family specifically seeking the breadth of the IB Diploma should compare an IB school rather than assume Chigwell offers both routes. Sixth-form curriculum
For a fictional pupil who loves both theatre and biology, we would ask whether their proposed subjects, rehearsals and any project can coexist comfortably. For another who is uncertain about most subjects, we would spend longer discussing course content before making an early sixth-form choice. Neither the number of subjects nor the most demanding-looking combination is a useful goal by itself.
Test the journey home after an activity
The school advertises Zeelo services for Year 3 upward, with routes through areas including Epping, Woodford, Enfield, Wanstead, Stratford and Romford. Check the actual stop, available seat and return service for your child; being on a route map is not a complete travel plan. School transport
The published Romford example leaves school at 16:20 or 18:00. Its last listed stop is reached at 17:14 or 18:54 respectively. Those are scheduled times for that route, not a guarantee for every bus or a door-to-door estimate. Add the journey from the stop to home, dinner and homework before deciding how many late afternoons make sense.
Learning support: ask who will do what in an ordinary lesson
Chigwell’s learning-support policy describes screening, classroom adaptations and individual or group help when needed. It distinguishes termly internal reviews from parent reviews scheduled at least annually. Ask what contact your family would receive between those meetings and what would trigger an earlier discussion. Learning-support policy, reviewed November 2024
The policy also makes the school’s selective entry and staff/facility limits clear. It asks families to disclose needs when applying. Many historic buildings have stairs and no lifts, so a pupil with mobility needs should discuss the actual route between lessons, not just access to the reception area.
Imagine a fictional child who understands spoken explanations but finds written instructions difficult. A useful meeting would establish how instructions reach that child in science, history and homework—not merely whether a weekly support session exists.
Keep entrance-test arrangements separate from daily provision. Agreement about one does not establish the other. Our learning-support guide provides a fuller comparison checklist and explains the distinction between separately charged services and required reasonable adjustments.
What the latest inspection adds
The April 2026 ISI inspection found the inspected standards met and identified the joined-up wellbeing, activities and pupil-leadership provision as a significant strength. That is stronger evidence than a school slogan about happiness, although it cannot tell you exactly how your child will experience the school. ISI report, April 2026
This report does not give an overall “excellent” or “outstanding” grade. It recorded 31 boarders in three sixth-form houses and described full, weekly and flexi arrangements. Public fees list full boarding only. The inspection is not an offer of a weekly place, and any other arrangement, with its price, has to be agreed with the school.
The report also identified mobile-phone policy and boarding risk-assessment issues that were corrected during the inspection. Its recommendations retained the need for consistent implementation. A sensible follow-up is to ask what changed and how leaders now check that procedures are followed. Neither ignoring the findings nor presenting them as uncorrected failures would give parents a fair picture.
Compare the bill after adding the extras you will use
The clearly labelled 2026/27 fee table gives £10,224 per term for Years 7–13 day pupils, including VAT. Three terms make £30,672 before extras. The sixth-form full-boarding figure is £18,360 per term. These are current-year figures, not a quote for September 2027. School fee schedule
Lunch, afternoon tea, textbooks and most clubs are included. Transport, examination fees, wraparound clubs and visiting-teacher music lessons can add to the bill.
Bursaries are a separate means-tested route. The fee page’s funding deadlines still refer to September 2026 entry, so obtain the 2027 dates directly. Do not shift last year’s dates forward yourself. A scholarship title is not a reliable answer to an affordability problem.
The acceptance deposit is £1,680: £1,200 is credited to the first term, £180 is refundable under the terms, and £300 is retained except as those terms allow. Read the actual offer and contract before paying. Our offers guide helps organise the questions when another decision is pending.
Applying at eleven: the meeting comes before the January exam
For September 2027, Chigwell gives 25 November 2026 at 5pm as the application deadline and 9 January 2027 as the exam date. Most meetings take place on 14 or 28 November. That is a reason to register early enough to arrange the meeting, rather than treat the final deadline as the natural starting point. Chigwell entry information
Parents meet a senior member of staff, while the child is seen separately. The whole meeting is described as thirty minutes, and a confidential current-school report also forms part of the process. Prepare your own questions as well as helping your child feel comfortable with conversation. You might ask how new Year 7 pupils join friendships, how staff respond when a pupil struggles, or what happens when two favourite activities clash.
One important detail needs confirmation: the 2027 page links to an assessment explanation still headed September 2026 entry. Before building a preparation plan around its timings, ask Admissions whether that description applies unchanged to your child’s January assessment. The linked explanation includes online work and written English; it is not sensible to prepare only for a traditional paper because that is what an older sibling remembers. Linked assessment explanation
That linked format has a 70-minute online first part covering English, maths and reasoning, followed by 35 minutes of problem solving and creative comprehension, then 30 minutes of written creative English. Confirm that these timings still apply for 2027. Use the official Quest familiarisation to understand the format rather than treating a commercial mock as a copy of the assessment.
For 2027 entry, results are due 18 February and acceptance by 10am on 5 March. Keep that reply deadline beside any funding decision; an academic offer alone does not settle affordability.
Our interview guide and writing guide offer practice ideas, not Chigwell’s unpublished questions. Keep preparation flexible enough for your child to respond to the actual task.
Sixth form: ask how the two subjects will be assessed
Chigwell’s live entry page describes intended subjects assessed at interview, while its January 2025 admissions policy describes two subject entrance exams. Ask which written, online and interview components apply to your intake before organising preparation. The descriptions should not be combined into an invented extra set of tests. Admissions policy Compare it with the current entry instructions.
Send Admissions the subjects your child is considering and ask about their GCSE conditions too. The school generally expects grades 8 or 9 in intended A-level subjects, with grade 7 considered through discussion. For a subject not studied at GCSE, ask which prior subjects demonstrate readiness. A general academic threshold does not settle eligibility for every course.
The published 2027 day-entry application deadline is 10pm on 12 October 2026, with assessments and interviews on 21 November, results on 30 November and acceptance by 4 January 2027. Boarding applicants follow a separate route; do not assume this day-place calendar covers them.
