Sevenoaks School: Critical Thinking, compulsory service and an IB sixth form

Sevenoaks makes breadth a commitment: Critical Thinking runs through Years 7–11, and a service afternoon is compulsory in Years 10–13. Sixth form centres on the IB. This can appeal to a child who wants science, languages and wider interests to remain part of the week; it also means those interests compete for time with a demanding academic programme.

The broad curriculum starts well before the IB

The June 2026 curriculum policy describes a wide lower-school programme, followed by usually ten or eleven GCSEs/IGCSEs and the school’s own Middle School Diploma. Core Critical Thinking runs through Years 7–11, and a service afternoon is compulsory in Years 10–13. The internal diploma records wider learning; it is not the International Baccalaureate qualification.

That makes breadth a commitment, not just a list of optional clubs. We would ask a prospective pupil whether they enjoy moving between different kinds of work. A child who is happy in science but reluctant to write needs help deciding whether that breadth would stretch them productively or leave them perpetually frustrated.

For a new Year 9 pupil, ask what happens if their previous school taught a different language or covered maths topics in another order. A clear account of placement and catch-up is more valuable than an assurance that entrants come from many backgrounds.

Would your child want six subjects at sixteen?

All Sevenoaks sixth formers take the IB Diploma. The school’s IB overview sets out six subjects, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, alongside Theory of Knowledge, an extended essay and Creativity, Activity and Service. English, a language and maths remain part of the programme. An arts subject can be replaced within the permitted alternatives.

If your teenager has decided to specialise and stop studying several subjects, compare the IB workload with an A-level route before choosing Sevenoaks.

Check individual combinations early. The current linked IB booklet introduces Computer Science at Higher Level only from September 2026, with limited places and oversubscription decisions drawing on commitment and earlier Computer Science performance. A course appearing in a booklet is not a guaranteed place for an external entrant.

The Maths section lists both Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretations at Standard and Higher Level. Before accepting, confirm that the proposed subjects can run together and ask for each subject’s entry requirements.

For day pupils, Saturday changes the calculation

Sevenoaks describes itself as a six-day school. Its sport programme places sport on Saturday afternoons from Year 9 upwards; Years 7 and 8 have sport and fixtures during the week. That younger-year exception does not mean there are no Saturday lessons.

The transport page lists five home-to-school bus routes, operating Monday–Friday. The station shuttle has Saturday-morning drop-off only. A family relying on school transport therefore needs a separate Saturday return plan. Routes also depend on demand.

A quick train from London is not the same as a quick journey home. Add the trip to your station, waiting, the school transfer and the last leg at the other end. Try the route at the relevant time before committing, especially if a missed connection would leave a younger child uncertain what to do.

Boarding: what happens when lessons finish?

The school’s boarding-life page says roughly 75% of boarders stay on ordinary weekends. The first weekend is compulsory; later weekend leave requires permission, with return by Sunday evening. This describes flexibility within boarding, not a verified pay-per-night or flexi package.

The boarding FAQ describes supervised prep for younger pupils, more independent working as they get older, and buddies for newcomers. Room-sharing varies. Ask to see the room type your child would actually enter and talk through what happens if sharing is difficult.

Parents overseas or a considerable distance away need a nearby education guardian aged at least 25. The school does not appoint one for you. Discuss emergency collection, illness and accommodation during closures, not just airport transfers.

Exeat weekends are planned breaks when boarding houses close. Use the dated 2026/27 calendar: it lists six, while the FAQ says five. Confirm departure and return arrangements before booking travel, especially around bank holidays.

Our advice is to ask your child about the quieter parts of boarding: bedtime, calling home, laundry, a disappointing afternoon and finding company on Sunday. A packed activities list cannot answer those questions. The boarding family guide takes them further.

Can they take part without already being exceptional?

Music gives some concrete examples. The ensemble descriptions include an open Chorus, a Foundation Orchestra for Years 7–9, and the invitation-only Sennocke Consort for older singers. Those are different opportunities.

Drama includes productions for different age groups, technical and backstage work, and clubs for pupils unable to commit to a full production. Years 7–9 productions begin as a club before auditions. That offers a way to try theatre, but does not promise a particular role.

For a keen athlete or musician, take a realistic weekly commitment to the school and ask how clashes are resolved. For a beginner, ask what they could join in their first half-term. Both children deserve a useful answer.

We would resist treating every interest as an admissions advantage. A hobby is worth keeping because the child enjoys it. If applying for a scholarship, use the relevant school requirements and remember that Sevenoaks scholarships are honorary: financial assistance is a separate process.

Learning support deserves a child-specific conversation

The September 2026 SEND policy welcomes applications from pupils with additional needs, including EHCPs, but explicitly says Sevenoaks is not specialist SEND provision. Admission depends on academic suitability and whether needs can reasonably be met.

It describes individual plans, group work and one-to-one support ranging from fortnightly to twice weekly according to need and availability. Younger pupils may come out of a timetabled lesson; sixth formers use study periods.

Disclose needs early and discuss assessment arrangements before testing. An external diagnosis or recommendation does not automatically secure every examination adjustment; the school must work with the relevant evidence and examination-board rules.

The September 2025 ISI report found all relevant standards met and praised the service-and-partnership programme. It also identified inconsistent classroom use of recommended learning-support strategies, which could affect progress. Its explicit next step was more consistent implementation. We have not found independent confirmation that this has since been resolved.

That is a focused question for a visit: how does the school now check that each teacher uses a pupil’s support plan? A good answer can acknowledge the recommendation and explain what changed.

The same inspection found effective boarding pastoral and medical care, including timely access to trained counsellors. It does not establish current waiting times, session limits or holiday provision. If your child already has therapeutic support, discuss continuity and escalation before accepting a place.

Which fee would your family actually pay?

The 2026/27 fee schedule distinguishes new sixth-form entrants from continuing pupils. All figures below include VAT. Annual amounts are our three-term calculations, not an all-inclusive budget or a quote for 2027/28.

PlacePer termThree terms
Day · Years 7–11£12,514£37,542
Day · continuing sixth form£12,734£38,202
Day · new sixth-form entrant£14,461£43,383
Boarding · Years 9–11£20,472£61,416
Boarding · continuing sixth form£20,639£61,917
Boarding · new sixth-form entrant£22,383£67,149

School-day lunches, including Saturday, and books for timetabled subjects are included. Additional tuition, some activities, equipment and clothing can add costs. Visa sponsorship administration is another £600 including VAT, not the total cost of immigration or guardianship.

Build a family budget with transport, uniform, trips, music or other chosen lessons, and any support charges. Leave room for future increases rather than assuming the first-year figure will hold throughout your child’s time there.

Day-commute bursaries, with boarding exceptions

Sevenoaks publishes means-tested awards of 5–100%. Its current bursary page focuses on day applicants already within a reasonable commute, usually about 45 minutes. It explicitly makes boarding exceptions for SpringBoard referrals and families receiving government Continuity of Education Allowance. Ask about eligibility before ruling yourself in or out.

Joining at eleven: start with the right pre-test

For Year 7 in September 2027, the application deadline is 21 September 2026. Registration costs £260 including VAT. The school asks for information about interests and support needs at confirmation, then requests a confidential reference. Bursary interest should also be raised at confirmation. See the 11+ application instructions.

The pre-test is not identical for every applicant. Children whose school offers ISEB must take it by 27 November 2026. Where their school does not offer ISEB, an existing Kent Test or alternative grammar-school score may be submitted instead. Families without either route should contact the Registrar. Sevenoaks does not host the ISEB sitting itself. Its assessment page explains the arrangements.

If your child is taking ISEB, use our Common Pre-Tests parent guide for registration, timings, adaptive questions and preparation. Keep that separate from Sevenoaks’ own written papers below.

Invited candidates then take English and Maths papers and a 40-minute group discussion on 5 January 2027. The current timetable gives 12 February for results and early March for acceptance. A £2,000 deposit is required. Check the offer letter for the exact acceptance date.

The reserve pool is not ranked. That means a parent should not expect a fixed position that moves steadily towards an offer. Stay in touch with Admissions while keeping another workable place available.

Our practical advice: settle the testing route before buying preparation materials. A Kent Test score is not itself a Sevenoaks offer, and a generic online-test course will not prepare a child for every part of the January day. The private-school 11+ guide helps build a balanced plan.
