Magdalen College School: coeducation from 2027, starting in Years 3 and 4
Magdalen College School is changing in a way that matters to every shortlist: the sixth form is already mixed, girls join Years 3 and 4 in 2027, and coeducation then rolls upward. The academic evidence is strong, but the right question is not whether MCS is impressive. It is whether the entry route, city-centre journey and evolving pupil mix fit your child.

Start with the school MCS is becoming, not the old label
MCS is a selective Oxford day school beside Magdalen College. It currently educates boys to Year 11 and girls and boys in sixth form. Under the school’s phased coeducation plan, girls enter Years 3 and 4 in 2027, Year 5 in 2028, Year 6 in 2029 and Year 7 in 2030.
That makes 2027 unusually easy to misread. Entry at 7+, 8+ and 16+ is coeducational. Entry at 9+, 11+ and 13+ is still for boys. A family joining Junior School should also ask how the balance will change as new mixed cohorts move upward.
Our view: this can suit a family looking for academic breadth in an Oxford city day school and willing to join during a phased coeducation transition. The journey and possible Saturday team commitments can be less forgiving when the family week is already tight.
The September 2027 cohort also starts under new leadership. MCS announced on 4 September 2026 that Alan Bird will succeed Helen Pike after August 2027. Ask which priorities and transition plans will carry across rather than assuming either continuity or immediate change.
The curriculum stays broad before ten GCSE or IGCSE subjects
The current curriculum policy keeps languages, humanities, sciences, arts, computing and design in the early Senior years. Pupils normally take ten GCSE or IGCSE subjects, including the three sciences and a modern language.
Sixth-form pupils begin at least four A levels and finish at least three, alongside independent Waynflete Studies and wider commitments.
School-published 2026 results were 58% grade 9 and 93% grades 9–7 at GCSE; at A level, 43% were A* and 97% A*–B. These are proportions of grades, not proof that every entrant will thrive or a value-added comparison with another school.
Test the journey against an ordinary dark weekday—and Saturday
The published Junior day is 8:25–3:25 and Senior 8:25–3:50. MCS currently advertises 12 subsidised bus routes shared with Headington School Oxford, still called Headington Rye Oxford on MCS’s current travel page. Headington’s own current page says ten routes. Treat neither count as a settled timetable. Oxford station is a stated 20–30-minute walk, and visitor parking is not available.
A linked 2019 bus timetable is too old for planning. Ask for the current stop, morning pickup, normal return, activities return and cost. Then repeat the calculation for a fixture day. The curriculum is Monday–Friday, but school policy expects Saturday sport and other activities; the actual frequency depends on year and team.
Support exists, but fit must be checked child by child
Senior pastoral care uses tutors, houses and Heads of Year. The school describes tutor groups of 12–18, a weekday Medical Centre, counsellors and a chaplain. Its activity count is broad, but the public pages do not promise that every club is free, non-selective or compatible with transport.
Families must disclose SEND, disability and requested access arrangements before assessment. Detailed Learning Support and Accessibility policies are available on request. A general pupil count cannot answer those questions for one child.
International families need special care. MCS is a day school and expects pupils to live with parents within daily commuting distance. Its policy and application form conflict over Child Student Visa sponsorship. Obtain the answer in writing before applying.
The latest inspection is positive, dated—and worth reading whole
The latest listed ISI report from October 2023 found all standards met, with positive evidence on attainment, pastoral care and SEND support.
Inspectors also asked leaders to strengthen oversight of recruitment checks and make Junior teaching more consistently build on prior attainment. The report predates the staged coeducation plan, so it cannot describe the 2027 transition.
Budget from the full school year, not the headline term
These are the school’s 2026–27 VAT-inclusive fees. They are a planning baseline, not a quote for September 2027.
| Stage | Term | Three terms |
|---|---|---|
| Years 3–4 | £9,665 | £28,995 |
| Years 5–11 | £10,036 | £30,108 |
| Sixth form incl. levy | £10,201 | £30,603 |
Senior lunch is optional at £6.36 per meal. Junior lunch is £3.06 a day and can be declined in writing. Music tuition, aftercare and activities such as sailing or golf cost extra. Registration is £180 UK and £300 overseas. Deposits are £750 UK or £1,500 overseas in Junior, and £1,500 UK or £2,500 overseas in Senior and sixth form. A general withdrawal notice clause was not publicly verifiable, so the current contract matters before you accept.
Bursaries at Senior entry, reviewed yearly
Means-tested bursaries range from 10% to 100% at 11+, 13+ and 16+. They are not available on admission to Junior School and are reviewed every year. A full award may also support uniform, lunch, trips and examinations.
Put the exact 2027 dates in the family calendar now
MCS publishes unusually useful route calendars. These dates are for September 2027 entry, except the Year 6 pre-test, which is for 2029. Do not substitute a scholarship deadline for the main application deadline.
| Route | Register / test | Decision / accept |
|---|---|---|
| 7+, 8+, 9+ | 31 Oct 2026 / 23 Jan 2027 | 9 Feb / 1 Mar 2027 |
| 11+, pre-test, direct 13+ | 31 Oct 2026 / 16 Jan 2027 | 4 Feb / 1 Mar 2027 |
| 16+ | 30 Sep / 7 Nov 2026 | Interviews 28 Nov; accept 4 Jan |
The 11+ and direct 13+ bursary deadline is 6 November 2026; sixth-form bursaries close 31 October. Junior observation dates and Senior interview dates differ by route, so use the school’s linked page rather than a copied family spreadsheet as the final check.
11+ and 13+ require fast switching, then sustained writing
The Senior assessment combines adaptive online maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning with non-adaptive English, puzzles and creative comprehension. A separate handwritten creative-writing paper lasts 45 minutes. With breaks and an activity session, the visit is much longer than the sum of the test timers.
Start with the official Quest familiarisation and creative-writing sample. A useful home drill is twenty minutes of mixed short tasks, a short break, then one full handwritten scene. It trains the change of pace without pretending to reproduce the exam.
Selected candidates bring an object or image, prepare a passage or poem, read aloud and discuss it. There may also be a short maths discussion. A useful practice conversation notices details, explains an interpretation and changes course when the text supports a better one. The school publishes no pass mark or offer odds.
