King Edward’s School Birmingham: room to follow an interest further

King Edward’s is an independent boys’ day school, separate from Birmingham’s state grammar-school admissions. Its 11+ uses its own English and maths papers, and current sixth-form entrants study A levels rather than the IB. Start with the route for your son’s age, then check how lessons and activities fit around the Edgbaston journey.

Would he enjoy the breadth before GCSE?

The academic overview makes languages a substantial part of the early years. Latin continues for three years; Greek can begin in Year 9. This can be exciting for a boy interested in how language works, but it deserves discussion with a child who finds language learning particularly tiring.

The 2026 lower-school booklet includes French, Latin, general science, computing, food technology and creative subjects in Year 7. “School for Thought” introduces small-group philosophical discussion.

Under the August 2026 curriculum policy, Year 8 pupils choose two modern languages from French, German and Spanish. In Year 9 they choose two creative subjects from art, DT, drama and music. A broad start does not mean every interest remains a timetabled subject indefinitely.

Ten GCSEs normally include both English qualifications, maths, a modern language and sciences. Three sciences are usually expected, with two discussed individually.

Sixth form now means A levels

KES introduced A levels for new sixth-form entrants in September 2025. Its current curriculum page lists 24 provisional subjects. Do not choose the school on the assumption that your son will join the IB programme described in older material.

The sixth-form guide describes starting four subjects and usually reducing to three around the end of the first term, with EPQ available. It also includes historical IB results. Those are evidence about earlier cohorts, not achieved A-level results for the new programme.

Some subjects are taught jointly with KEHS; music and drama also bring pupils together. Ask whether your son’s intended classes are shared, where they take place and whether the combination can be timetabled. This limited shared provision does not turn the whole boys’ school into a coeducational school.

The sixth-form deadline for September 2026 entry was 2 February 2026. Contact admissions for the 2027 date rather than assuming it falls at the same time.

Put the journey beside the homework

The school timetable gives a 4pm finish Monday to Thursday and 3.20pm on Friday. Its registration table says 8.45am while nearby prose says 8.55am; confirm the required arrival time before planning a tight connection.

Early arrival is advertised from 7.30am, with breakfast from 7.45am. After-school study and activities can extend the day; the stated leaving times are 6pm Monday to Thursday and 5pm Friday unless a supervised activity continues.

The lower-school booklet gives Year 7 homework examples of 20–25 minutes per subject, with English around 45 minutes. That is not a total nightly promise. It advises parents to stop work that substantially overruns and leave a planner note.

A workable morning journey is only half the decision. Try a realistic evening calculation: departure after a club, travel, food and the homework your child needs time to do calmly. A school can be a strong academic fit yet leave too little usable time at home.

Check the bus after the rehearsal, too

The travel page points families towards University station and local buses. The 1S is open to the public; it is not a private school coach simply because many pupils use it. The former 51S has been withdrawn.

Walsall provision uses Tripable, paid directly by families. The school also advertises new Zeelo routes from September 2026. Check an actual bookable stop, operating day and return time rather than inferring a service from the town names on the page.

Ask where a beginner joins in

Friday afternoons vary by age. Year 7 has games training and fixtures; older pupils, from Year 10, can choose activities such as CCF, service, leadership or stage crew. Do not assume a younger pupil can select the same menu as a sixth former.

The sports programme includes rugby and hockey in winter, with cricket, athletics and tennis in summer. Several sports have Saturday fixtures.

For a musician or actor, joint activities with KEHS widen the group of possible collaborators. A facilities tour will not answer those timetable questions.

For a quieter child, ask about a small society he could join without an audition, trial or existing friendship group. Our preference would be to hear a concrete answer—who welcomes him and when the group meets—rather than a long catalogue of clubs.

Who notices when he is finding it hard?

The pastoral structure starts with the daily form tutor, supported by heads of year and school-section leaders.

The support page describes a nurse, on-site counselling and mental-health support, teacher help sessions and senior-pupil mentoring. These are useful provisions, but the page does not establish an appointment waiting time or a guaranteed amount of support for each pupil.

The SEND team includes a qualified coordinator and an Assistant Head for Inclusion. Vince House has a quieter space, with regular access arranged through the department.

KES is not presented as a provider of intensive specialist treatment. Before accepting, discuss the frequency of any intervention, missed lessons, homework support and possible additional costs. “Support available” is a starting point for that conversation, not an individual provision agreement.

What independent inspection adds

The 18–20 November 2025 ISI inspection found that applicable standards were met. It identified pupils’ sense of belonging across faiths and backgrounds as a significant strength. That is a more useful finding for some families than another examination ranking.

Inspectors also recommended sharing effective teaching practice more consistently so that lessons engage pupils and develop their skills. Meeting standards is not an “Outstanding” grade, and a dated report cannot promise every child the same experience.

Build a budget beyond the tuition figure

The published 2026–27 fee is £7,695 including VAT per term. Multiplying by three gives £23,085 in annual tuition. These are current-year figures, not a quotation for September 2027; do not add VAT again.

Year 7 lunch is compulsory at a published £4.75 per school day. That is £23.75 for a five-day week, but an annual bill depends on the actual charged days. Instrumental tuition, camps and some trips cost extra.

The linked extras sheet covers 2025–26, so treat its trip costs as illustrations rather than a current quote. Budget transport and uniform separately, and check what public-examination charges are included in your fee schedule.

Main 11+ and 16+ registration is £60 including VAT; other entry points cost £180, with specified benefit exemptions. The £400 deposit is a separate commitment. For three full-fee children attending KES and KEHS concurrently, the fees page describes a 25% eldest-child discount; confirm eligibility for your exact arrangement.

Up to 25 Assisted Places at Year 7

Assisted Places depend on means, selection and available funding. The school advertises up to 25 Year 7 awards, about ten covering full fees, and several sixth-form awards. Those numbers describe possible provision, not a promise for a particular applicant.

Income below £28,000 could qualify for full support; the published upper income guide is £80,000. Neither is an automatic entitlement. Assets and family circumstances matter, and the March 2026 policy also requires at least twelve months of school attendance or formal home education in its defined West Midlands area at application.

For 2027 entry, September comes quickly

The current admissions calendar gives the following dates for Year 7 in September 2027. The eligible birth range is 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2016. Save the earlier access-arrangements deadline separately: a family needing adjustments cannot safely work backwards from the general closing date alone.

The application also leads to a report from the current headteacher. Give that school reasonable notice, especially if you are considering several independent schools. Tell KES about an Assisted Place or music application at registration rather than waiting to see how the papers go.

There is a practical residence condition, but not a distance-priority catchment. The FAQ says there is no catchment preference. Admissions nevertheless requires suitable immigration permission and living locally with family; KES does not sponsor Child Student visas. A school place and permission to live in the UK are different questions.

Prepare for English and maths—not a generic 11+

KES writes and marks its own entrance papers. Verbal reasoning was removed for 2026 entry onwards. For the current route, buying a large reasoning course because another Birmingham school uses one would miss the school’s stated assessment.

The live page describes two one-hour papers. Its linked March 2025 parent advice gives a different English breakdown: 40 minutes for comprehension, including reading, plus 30 for composition. That totals 70 minutes. Ask admissions whether reading sits outside the current hour or the older timing has changed.

This disagreement need not stop useful preparation. Your son still needs to read carefully, support an answer with evidence and organise a piece of writing. For maths, work on applying familiar arithmetic when the question looks unfamiliar. Once the school confirms the timing, practise pacing with that answer—not an assumed reconciliation of the documents.

We have not verified a published pass mark or a reliable way to predict an offer from a score. A practice percentage is useful for finding weaknesses; it is not a prediction of admission. The independent 11+ guide explains how to plan preparation without turning every exercise into an admissions forecast.
