St Albans or Habs: which school would fit your family?

St Albans School, St Albans High School for Girls and the two Habs schools often appear on the same family shortlist. But they offer different routes in, different classroom mixes and different journeys home. Here is how we would work through the choice with a parent—not by declaring one school best for everyone.

The classroom mix is different at each school

SchoolWho joins?What to understand
St Albans SchoolMixed Year 7 and Sixth Form entry; by September 2027, Years 7–8 and Sixth Form are mixedMixed Year 9 entry begins in 2028. Confirm direct Year 9 eligibility for 2027.
St Albans High School for Girls (STAHS)Girls, Reception to Sixth FormPrep is in Wheathampstead; Senior and Sixth Form are in St Albans.
Habs BoysBoys, Reception to Sixth FormSeparate school on a shared Elstree campus; at least one Sixth Form subject in a mixed class.
Habs GirlsGirls, Reception to Sixth FormSome shared activities and Sixth Form teaching do not make the whole school coeducational.

For a daughter who wants mixed lessons from Year 7, St Albans School is the relevant option among these four. Its published transition began with Year 7 in 2026. Ask what the first cohort’s experience has taught staff, how facilities and activities work, and how they will support the next intake. There is no published gender balance to promise.

For a daughter who prefers an all-girls classroom, start with STAHS and Habs Girls. The Habs Sixth Form arrangement may appeal to a pupil who wants some mixed teaching later. It may matter less to a family whose immediate decision is about Reception or Year 7.

For a boy, compare Habs Boys with the actual St Albans year group he would enter. Avoid describing St Albans simply as a boys’ school or as already mixed throughout. Those shortcuts hide a real difference in the choice.

Every entry point, not just Year 7

The Year 7 tables further down this page compare dates and tests. This one widens the view: which ages each school admits at, and what kind of school a child would be joining.

SchoolEntry pointsDay or boardingWorth knowing
Habs Boys4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+DaySelected activities and at least one sixth-form subject are shared with Habs Girls
Habs Girls4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+DayPaper-based QUEST entrance assessment; the admissions page and policy disagree on Year 7 places
St Albans High School for Girls4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+DayLong day and a broad coach network; no 2027 applicant or external-place counts published
St Albans School11+, deferred 13+, direct 13+ and 16+DayBecoming coeducational one cohort at a time; about 80 Year 7 places and roughly 300 candidates published

Only the two girls’ schools and Habs Boys take children at 4+ and 7+, so a family hoping for one school from Reception narrows the list quickly. At 13+, St Albans School splits its route into deferred and direct entry, and Habs Boys and St Albans High also list a 13+ route; Habs Girls does not.

None of the four offers boarding. The everyday differences sit in the journey, the length of the day and, at St Albans School, which cohorts are already mixed.

These rows summarise our four school guides as reviewed; the schools’ own admissions pages remain the authority on routes and places.

Try the journey after a club, not just before an open day

Habs and STAHS finish Senior lessons at 16:00. Habs ordinary coaches leave at 16:15 and late coaches at 17:30; STAHS lists 16:10 and 17:40. St Albans School publishes late routes at 18:00. Those departure times are not arrival-home times, and late routes may differ from morning routes.

Use the current transport information for Habs, STAHS and St Albans School. Check an available seat, the exact stop and what happens when a rehearsal or away fixture finishes after the last service.

Transport charges also need care when comparing. STAHS currently quotes £618–£752 per term for Senior coaches and £13.23 for a casual journey. St Albans School quotes £10.49–£13.15 per day. Habs uses a live booking portal. Obtain the fare and seat availability for your actual ordinary and late route rather than converting these different tariffs into an assumed annual total.

For a keen musician or team player, the late return may be the normal journey several days a week. Ask your child to pick two likely commitments, then work backwards from arrival home, dinner and sleep. A school can be geographically close but practically awkward.

For younger siblings, investigate care separately. Habs Reception–Year 2 cannot use the late coach. STAHS Prep offers wraparound, but its different site still matters. A single household timetable is more useful than four attractive transport maps.

Compare the bill you would pay, not just tuition

These are published 2026–27 Year 7 costs including VAT. They are not quotes for September 2027. Annual tuition means three terms; the additions below deliberately stop short of an invented all-in total.

SchoolAnnual tuitionAdd before travel and activities
STAHS£29,328Daily lunch plan £330 per term; £30,318 with three terms of that plan
St Albans School£30,456Compulsory Years 7–10 lunch £5.72 per day; confirm billed days and device requirements
Habs Girls£31,293Compulsory device £504 a year; £31,797 before optional lunch at £5.50 per day
Habs Boys£32,487Compulsory device £504 a year; £32,991 before optional lunch at £5.50 per day

Check the original schedules for STAHS, St Albans School, Habs Girls and Habs Boys. Add your actual coach route, uniform, music, trips, exam charges and any separately charged support. Do not assume the absence of an item from this table means it is free.

STAHS has the lowest published Year 7 tuition in this group. That is useful information, but not proof it will be cheapest for your household. The difference can narrow once your journeys, activities and any award are included.

Deposits and withdrawal notice are separate from the annual budget. Habs terms can require the next term’s full fee in lieu of sufficient notice, including for an award holder; do not assume your normal reduced contribution caps the liability.

We could not locate a reliable public STAHS parent contract or published St Albans School deposit and notice terms. That prevents a complete comparison of these commitments; it does not mean those schools have no withdrawal charges. Obtain both contracts before choosing which offer to accept.

A supportive reputation is not a support plan

Send the same short description of your child’s needs to each school: what helps now, what is difficult, existing assessments and what support must continue.

The Habs SEND policy explicitly says it is not a specialist provider and does not provide regular specialist teaching. St Albans School describes up to three individual sessions a year for pupils with an individual learning plan. That should not be mistaken for weekly specialist tuition. STAHS describes an assess–plan–do–review approach; ask what it means for your daughter’s timetable.

Compare frequency, staffing, classroom adjustments, missed lessons, cost and how progress is reviewed. Separate the help needed during an entrance assessment from the provision needed after joining. A child may qualify for exam adjustments without the school being able to deliver every ongoing need.

At Habs Boys, 11+ SEND reports are due by 6 November 2026. Do not copy that date to the other three schools or assume it covers ordinary school references: obtain the relevant evidence deadlines. Disclose needs at application and leave time for the school to consider adjustments.

One preparation plan needs three different test formats

The schools publish their own calendars: Habs Boys, Habs Girls, St Albans School and STAHS. All four list Year 7 offers on 12 February 2027. Do not assume their reply times or financial-aid deadlines also match.

Place counts do not answer “which is easiest to get into?” St Albans School gives about 80 Year 7 places and says roughly 300 candidates usually sit. Habs Boys describes a total Year 7 cohort of 160–175, including about 60 Prep pupils and a small group-pathway intake; its current policy separately gives about 100–110 places.

Habs Girls’ live page says 80–85 places, but its current policy says 60–70. STAHS publishes no 2027 applicant or place count. These figures describe different things, and places are not offers. They cannot support a reliable ranking of admissions odds. Ask each school about the external intake for your child’s year.

Reading, arithmetic and explaining ideas aloud help across this shortlist. Familiarisation must then become school-specific. An ISEB-only course does not cover every task at Habs or St Albans School; being comfortable on a screen does not remove the need to practise writing by hand.

A manageable week might include two short Maths sessions, regular reading, one reasoning session and one piece of writing discussed together. This is our suggested routine, not a school-prescribed plan. Use the school’s own sample material to spot gaps before adding more timed papers.

For practical follow-ups, use our ISEB guide, writing examples and interview guide. The aim is a child who can show their thinking, not repeat a model personality.
