Harrow School: full boarding for boys at 13+ and 16+, close to London
Harrow is close to London, but it is not a London day school with beds attached. Your son would live in a boarding house, go to lessons on Saturdays and build much of his social life around school. The question is not just whether he could win a place. It is whether he would enjoy the life that comes with it.

Look at the choices behind the broad curriculum
Harrow calls Year 9 the Shell. It is a broad foundation year spanning sciences, humanities, arts and technology, with Latin and two language choices. Later, the 2026–28 GCSE booklet describes ten qualifications: English Language, English Literature, maths and seven options. Those options must include at least two sciences and a modern foreign language in which the boy is not a native speaker.
Astronomy is an optional off-timetable eleventh subject, not an ordinary option in that seven. The published groups are illustrative; not every desired combination is guaranteed. These are current-cohort details, not a promise about the choices available to a boy arriving in 2029.
Harrow follows A levels, not the IB. Its 2026–28 sixth-form booklet normally starts boys with four subjects, with the possibility of dropping the fourth after February half-term in Year 12, in consultation with the House Master. Four final A levels are not required of everyone. The actual options grid, subject prerequisites and workload deserve attention before the application’s four choices are settled.
If he wants a demanding maths combination alongside serious music, put rehearsals and practice into the same weekly plan. A school may offer every individual interest while the combined timetable still proves too much.
The Super-Curriculum adds seminars, reading, talks and other study beyond examinations. Electives contribute to the Harrow Diploma and can change from year to year. This is a useful reason to look beyond results.
For academic support, a house-linked tutor helps with targets and organisation. The important answer is a sequence of help and review, not simply that extra support exists.
What do the results tell you?
In August 2026, Harrow reported more than 70% of A-level grades at A*–A and over 90% at A*–B. Its 2026 GCSE announcement said nearly a quarter of boys achieved at least ten grades at 9–8/A*. These use different measures: one counts grades, the other boys.
Strong results are a reason to investigate the teaching, not a prediction for your son.
A house is where the school becomes personal
There are twelve boarding houses, with house adults, tutors and a non-teaching House Visitor providing different points of contact. Initial room-sharing lasts three to six terms, according to the boarding FAQ; boys then have individual rooms.
Visit a bedroom and study space, not just the common room. Ask how roommates are chosen, what happens if sharing is difficult, and where a boy can go when he wants quiet. “He will learn to cope” is not a complete answer to a persistent sleep or sensory problem.
Saturday includes lessons and activities, but no formal evening homework period. Sundays can include house activities and rehearsals, with homework in the evening. Lunch or tea with parents can be arranged with the House Master. Limited overnight leave does not mean you cannot visit.
Year 9 boys have no floating exeat in autumn and one in each of spring and summer. These discretionary overnight leaves cannot displace commitments. They are not weekly boarding, and they are separate from scheduled breaks in the term calendar.
The live FAQ says Years 9–11 hand in phones and school computers overnight. It also limits regular outside sport, with specified exceptions for sports scholars training with professional academies. Confirm current arrangements with the house and sports staff before committing.
A nearby London address does not remove these boarding obligations. Our test would be: if your family could collect him easily every weekend, would he still want to stay? That helps separate a genuine wish to board from a practical solution to transport.
There is more here than a sporting stereotype
The arts programme involves all Year 9 boys in house drama and a creative project, alongside music and art lessons. A boy need not arrive as an accomplished performer to take part. Equally, a theatre or a long concert list does not promise him a particular role or ensemble.
Service and leadership include community work, conservation and the cadet programme from Year 10. The learning FAQ says games participation is expected, but no individual sport is compulsory.
Our preference would be a timetable with room to enjoy two or three things properly, rather than a collection of activities that leaves no recovery time. Ask a current pupil what he stopped doing and why. That can tell you as much as the activities he proudly lists.
Harrow’s new partnership with Downe House plans joint academic, activity and social opportunities. It does not make Harrow coeducational. Calendar alignment is planned from 2028, so families with children at both schools should not assume their holidays already match.
Ask how help reaches your particular child
Harrow’s pastoral provision includes resident house adults, 24-hour nursing, weekday GP access, psychological and counselling support, and an independent Listening Ear. Those are different services; they do not mean every specialist is available immediately or overnight.
The September 2025 SEND policy describes individual planning, classroom adjustments and individual or group help. Boys with identified needs have a Learning Skills caseworker monitoring progress. Send educational-psychology, medical and relevant school reports at registration, not after the offer. Entrance adjustments must be agreed for the assessment; a concession in another exam is not automatic approval here.
For English as an additional language, Harrow describes screening and specialist help, but expects sufficient fluency for school life. A child who can pass a short conversation may still find fast classroom discussion and shared-room negotiation tiring.
Faith is part of the weekly routine. The chaplaincy page describes Thursday services and Sunday arrangements including Chapel, Mass or an agreed Thought for the Day, alongside support for other faiths.
What the inspection adds
The February 2024 ISI inspection found all standards met and identified academic enrichment as a significant strength. It described effective learning support and boarding care. Its recommended next step was to document checks on parent-arranged guardians more consistently—not that no checks were being made.
We have not verified that this next step has since been closed. Positive inspection findings are useful reassurance, but they cannot tell you how an individual friendship difficulty or support request will unfold.
Work out the bill before falling in love with the place
The 2026/27 fee is £21,990 per term including VAT: £65,970 across three terms, before extras. Board, tuition, textbooks, a stationery allowance and laundry are included. Additional tuition can cost extra. This is not a 2027/28 fee quote.
Do not assume all learning support is an extra charge. The SEND policy includes lessons for identified, documented learning needs and internal assessments in the school fee. Diagnostic assessments and specialist provision may carry separately agreed costs.

Where at least one parent normally lives overseas, an additional term’s-fee deposit is required and credited to the final bill. School visa sponsorship brings a £3,000 annual administration charge.
Before accepting, obtain the current full parent contract and the refund rules for each deposit. The publicly linked cancellation notice is dated October 2019; it is not a substitute for current withdrawal and fee-in-lieu terms.
Build your own extras list: music, specialist lessons, equipment, trips and journeys home. Decide which are essential to the school life your son wants. A budget that works only if he declines every activity that attracted him is not yet a workable budget.
UK residence and an early bursary declaration
Harrow’s June 2026 bursary guidance requires parents to be fully UK-resident and to have lived in the UK for at least two continuous years when applying. Declare the need at registration; for 13+, written notification is required no later than October of Year 6. Ask the Access Team if the registration fee itself is unaffordable.
For 13+, start several years before the move
The current admissions calendar gives the following dates for boys entering Year 9 in September 2029. The selection happens while they are in Year 6, not in the summer before they arrive.
| Step | Published timing |
|---|---|
| Register with Harrow | 30 September 2026 |
| Complete ISEB Pre-Tests | Before 30 November 2026; see the date caution below |
| Harrow Test for invited applicants | January–March 2027 |
There is a genuine date inconsistency to check. The general process guidance says 20 November for ISEB, while the exact-cycle calendar says before 30 November. Ask Admissions to confirm your deadline; where practical, arranging an earlier sitting avoids relying on the later wording. Some older official text also retains an earlier registration cutoff.
Registering with Harrow does not register your child with ISEB. Arrange the test through ISEB’s guardian process and an approved sitting venue. If he has already taken it for another school, give Harrow his Applicant ID rather than booking another attempt. Our 13+ and pre-test guide explains how to keep the school application, test registration and later offer conditions separate.
What if you are looking later?
Ordinary Year 9 registration for September 2027 is closed. The calendar lists late deadlines of 1 January 2027 for 2028 entry and 1 January 2028 for 2029 entry. That is not a promise of places. Late overseas eligibility is also described differently across Harrow’s pages, so an overseas family should obtain written confirmation before paying or arranging tests.
Tell Admissions the intended entry year, your son’s current year group, where he attends school and whether funding is essential. “Can we still apply?” is much easier to answer with those details than with his age alone.
Prepare a boy who can think and talk—not a script
Harrow’s Year 9 page describes a 20-minute House Master interview, an hour of computer-based English and maths, and a 20-minute group activity after ISEB and a school reference. Its Admissions FAQ also names non-verbal reasoning.
There are no published past papers for the ordinary Harrow Test. The school’s Academic Scholarship papers are a different, later assessment. Using them as the benchmark for an eleven-year-old’s ordinary entrance preparation could create unnecessary worry.
A useful preparation routine is small and repeatable: read something your son enjoys, discuss a decision a character makes, work through a maths problem aloud and let him explain an activity without your help. Familiarity with the computer format can reduce distraction; it cannot replace understanding.
The process guidance asks shortlisted standard applicants for a handwritten CV. Help him remember what he has actually done, then let him describe it. A list of certificates is less revealing than a short account of a project, a team role or something he kept working at after an awkward start.
Three conversations to try at home
- “Tell me about something you changed your mind about.” Let him explain the original view and what changed it.
- “What do you enjoy doing when you are not the best person in the room?” Look for a real example, not a declaration that he loves challenges.
- “What would be exciting about boarding, and what might be difficult?” Both halves deserve an honest answer.
These are our own practice prompts, not reported Harrow interview questions. If your son hesitates, give him time. Practising how to recover, ask for clarification or admit uncertainty is more useful than memorising an impressive opening sentence.
For group work, try planning an outing with siblings or friends on a limited budget. Can he suggest an idea, hear an objection and improve the plan? Do not teach him that leadership means talking first or most. A quieter child can contribute clearly without pretending to be an extrovert.
