Benenden: a girls’ boarding community with a small day intake
Benenden brings lessons, activities and friendships into a predominantly boarding community, with a small day intake. A day place still involves Saturdays and closed weekends. Before choosing between the two, work out how much of that shared school life your daughter wants—and how often your family expects her home.

The subjects beyond exams are part of the appeal
Benenden’s 2026–27 curriculum plan keeps a language in the usual GCSE programme and caps the normal load at ten GCSEs. Sixth form usually means three A levels, sometimes four. Sport, Professional Skills and electives continue alongside them.
The October 2025 ISI inspection singled out the non-examined CREATE and elective programme as a strength. CREATE brings subjects together in Years 7–8; Year 8 pupils complete their own research project. This gives girls room to pursue an idea beyond the boundaries of a single exam subject. Seeing ordinary project work would tell you more about the appeal than another list of available subjects.
The co-curricular programme sits alongside at least three sport lessons a week, including in sixth form. That makes physical activity part of the week even for girls who do not seek a place on a team.
Boarding changes as girls grow older
The new-student information describes Medway for Years 7–8, five Middle School Houses for Years 9–11 and four Founders Houses for sixth form. Day pupils belong to Houses too. This means a girl moves into a different age-group setting as she grows, rather than remaining in one mixed-age boarding House throughout senior school.
Who helps an eleven-year-old settle? How are friendships considered when pupils change Houses? What happens if roommates are not getting along? A confident tour guide can describe the best version of school life; a good admissions conversation should also explain the ordinary difficulties and how adults respond.
Benenden is predominantly full boarding, but full boarding does not mean every pupil is present every weekend. Ask for the current leave calendar, the number staying in your daughter’s year on a typical open weekend and what she would do if her closest friends went home. The answer may matter more than the total school roll.
The 2025–26 handbook allows ordinary weekend leave after Saturday lessons and other commitments, with return on Sunday evening or Monday morning. Fixed exeats are different: the school closes and pupils must go home or to an approved host or guardian. Use the current term dates for exact departures and returns. A boarding place does not remove the need for a workable plan during those closures.
The handbook also gives younger boarders limited phone windows: the published Year 7 weekday slot is 7:20–8pm. Years 7–11 day pupils hand phones in on arrival and collect them when leaving. Laptop rules differ, and the timetable is subject to review. Check the current routine for her year rather than assuming she can message home throughout the day.
Our boarding-school parent guide offers a fuller set of questions about leave, friendships, care and family contact. Use it to compare real residential routines rather than a collection of campus photographs.
A day place still asks for a substantial school week
The day-student page requires arrival by 8:10am on weekdays and 8:40am on Saturdays. Saturday lessons and sporting commitments are part of the offer. It says the first and last weekends of term are closed weekends and compulsory for day pupils too. Confirm the precise attendance pattern; another FAQ uses softer wording in one passage.
The welcome FAQ gives a usual weekday lesson finish of 5:10pm, with day pupils welcome to stay until 8:30pm; Saturday lessons finish at 10:45am, before any fixtures. The handbook shows a shorter Wednesday. The FAQ also describes occasional overnight stays when a bed is available, at an extra charge. That is not a guaranteed flexi-boarding place or a promise that transport fits every evening activity.
The published daily bus runs from Tonbridge via Tunbridge Wells and Goudhurst, returning from school at 5:30pm. Other listed routes may be available on request, with a full term’s notice. Confirm that your route will run. A bus that works for lessons may not work after rehearsals.
Ask how help reaches a child who is struggling
The currently linked SEND policy describes classroom and group support, with individual teaching points shared with teachers. Its Level 3 provision is a chargeable weekly 25-minute individual lesson. The policy was reviewed in January 2025 and due for review in January 2026. A policy is not an individual provision guarantee.
For admissions, arrange adjustments before booking tests. ISEB’s SEND guidance asks families to involve the current SENCo and receiving school and provide supporting evidence. Approval for ISEB does not automatically cover Benenden’s writing, interview or subject papers.
The welcome information describes two counsellors and six free sessions, with parents asked to pay if longer-term counselling is recommended. Confirm the current arrangements and waiting times. For a pupil already receiving care, discuss continuity with the school and the professionals involved rather than assuming an on-site service can replace an existing plan.
The 2025 inspection found all standards met, including safeguarding. It praised support for pupils with ongoing medical needs, but recommended faster initial assessment of health concerns and more reliable policy updates. This is a reason for specific questions about access to care, not a claim that every aspect of medical provision was poor.
What would your family actually pay?
The published 2026–27 fees include VAT. The annual figures below are our calculations for three terms before extras, not a quote for a future entry year.
| Place | Per term | Three terms |
|---|---|---|
| Day | £15,400 | £46,200 |
| Boarding | £21,300 | £63,900 |
| Overseas sixth-form joiner: published rate | £23,390 | £70,170 |
The ordinary day-to-boarding difference is £17,700 a year at these rates. The overseas sixth-form figure needs a written quote: the page describes a 10% premium, but its printed amount does not exactly match a simple 10% addition to the boarding fee. We have retained the published amount rather than silently correcting it or applying it to every overseas pupil.
Build your own extras list: transport, music or drama tuition, uniform, trips, learning or language support, occasional nights and guardianship if needed. The day page says some weekend events cost extra for day pupils. A broad “activities included” statement does not answer every case.
Before paying to accept, request the current parent contract, deposit amount and refund rules. Ask about notice for withdrawal, changing boarding status and cancelling optional lessons. We have not verified a current public contract that settles those terms, so we would not import another school’s notice period into your budget.
Support without a scholarship, and the Fourths scheme
The bursary page says a scholarship is not required for means-tested support. The published schemes require UK residence. The linked policy mainly concerns day places, with boarding exceptions; the Founders sixth-form scheme expressly includes day or boarding. The Fourths 11+ scheme is restricted to named local primary schools, not every child living nearby. Check the actual list.
Which application calendar is yours?
The current Entry and Assessments page names 11+ entry in 2027 and 13+ entry in 2029. The same autumn assessment therefore serves children arriving two years apart. The following is a planning summary checked on 4 September 2026, not a substitute for your individual registration confirmation.
| Entry route | Published next steps | Check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| 11+ · September 2027 | Preview: 19 September 2026. ISEB by Friday 13 November. December offers; acceptance/deposit 1 March 2027. | Registration is normally by the end of Year 5. |
| 13+ · September 2029 | Preview: 19 September 2026. ISEB: 1–31 October in Year 6. Offers before the end of 2026. | This is early selection for Year 9, not an offer to join at eleven. |
| 12+ · limited places | Runs alongside the 13+ process. | Ask for the exact cohort calendar and whether an offer depends on a later vacancy. |
| 14+ · Year 10 | Register by 1 October before entry. English and maths: Thursday 5 November. | The page omits the year beside the November date. Confirm it in writing. |
| 16+ · Year 12 | Register by 1 October before entry. Two subject papers: Friday 6 November. | Again, confirm the year, chosen papers and any GCSE conditions. |
The currently linked admissions policy was reviewed in June 2025 and due for review in June 2026. It contains different deadlines. We would use the explicitly newer route page for planning, then ask Registry to confirm the full sequence. Do not combine a deadline from one document with a test date from another.
The registration page gives £420 including VAT for the main-list Form A. Form B is used for waiting-list or bursary cases and has no initial registration fee; the entry page also directs late older-entry applicants to it. Registration is not an offer, and an offer for one entry age is not automatically transferable to another.
For 13+ entry in 2027 or 2028, the ordinary offers have already been made. The school welcomes later enquiries, but availability needs checking before you prepare. For the normal early route, registration is recommended by the end of Year 5.
Your first email can be straightforward: give your daughter’s date of birth, current school year, intended arrival year, day or boarding preference and whether financial assistance is essential. Ask which route is open. That short exchange is more valuable than weeks of preparing for an intake that is already full.
What are they looking for beyond the online test?
For the younger routes, Benenden describes an immersive Preview Day with enquiry activities, creative writing and an interview, alongside a confidential school report with recent test information. Alternative arrangements are possible if a candidate cannot attend. The current page also says 11+ Academic awards come from the overall assessment, without a separate scholarship exam.
The ISEB Common Pre-Tests cover English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Parents register separately and share the applicant details with schools. Benenden’s route-specific deadline matters: the provider’s testing season runs much longer than the school’s own window.
Our advice is to prepare the parts differently. Familiarity with an online interface is useful for ISEB. For an interview, practise an ordinary conversation about a book, activity or idea your child actually knows. For writing, concentrate on making a scene or argument clear. More test questions are not a replacement for all three.
Try asking, “What did you change your mind about recently?” Then listen. A child who pauses, explains and adds an example is doing something more useful than delivering a rehearsed list of achievements. These are our general practice suggestions, not leaked Benenden questions or a published marking scheme.
Give the current school reasonable notice about the reference. If a move, illness or other disruption affected progress, ask what accurate context it can supply. Do not ask teachers to inflate a recommendation. Equally, do not assume that a single uneven report tells the whole story; establish how admissions wants that context presented.
Our private-school 11+ guide helps organise a balanced preparation plan. For a child being assessed now but staying at prep school until thirteen, use the 13+ guide to keep assessment, offer and eventual entry separate.
